Polarizing Film: An Essential Component in Optical Systems
What is Polarizing Film?
Polarizing film, also known as polarizing filter, is a thin layer of material that only transmits light waves that vibrate in one direction, known as polarized light. It blocks light that vibrates in other directions. Polarizing film is commonly made from stretched polymer materials with embedded iodine or dichroic substances that selectively absorb light depending on its oscillation direction.
Types of Polarizing Film
There are different types of polarizing films available depending on the embedded dye or material used:
- Iodine Polarizing Film: One of the earliest developed Polarizing Film, iodine polarizing film contains microscopic iodine crystals embedded in a polymer film. It selectively absorbs light oscillating in one direction while transmitting light vibrating perpendicularly. Iodine polarizing film offers good performance but has staining issues.
