Fenbendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug used to treat worm infections in livestock including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. It belongs to the benzimidazole class of anthelmintics which work by interfering with the worm's energy production. Fenbendazole is effective against many common gastrointestinal roundworms and pinworms affecting farm animals.
Mechanism of Action
Fenbendazole works by selectively binding to beta-tubulin in helminths, preventing the polymerization of microtubules which are vital components of the cytoskeleton. By disrupting microtubule formation, fenbendazole inhibits several metabolic pathways in the worms including those involved in glucose uptake. This leads to an energy deficit in the worms which eventually causes their death. Fenbendazole has little to no effect on host (animal) microtubules which allows it a wide margin of safety when used at recommended doses.
